During early 2021 when I still lived in Seoul, South Korea, I decided I would hike every mountain in the city. However, I discovered that every “complete” list of mountains in both English and Korean was actually incomplete. I ended up compiling what may be the only actual complete list of mountains within Seoul that exists. The process of doing this was extremely tedious with the final stages being me zooming in and out of Naver Maps for hours. My criteria for selection was essentially adding any peak not connected to a mountain with a higher peak and any mountain that passed the Seoul border. You may notice that the hiking date for a lot of mountains may be the same. This isn’t an error. While doing this, I would dedicate my entire day to hiking. As it is now 2025 at the time I am publishing this, it’s possible that this list is also no longer accurate due to site preparation. Keep in mind that not all of these mountains meet the international standard of height to be classified as a mountain. During this hiking adventure, I also hiked some mountains outside of Seoul, which I’ll include at the bottom.

Special Note: The pathway between 삼성산 Samseongsan and this mountain is really difficult. I only came across elderly people (read: very experienced hikers) on that path. There are several parts where you need to climb by rope and also several parts where there is no railing or anything to stop you from falling to your death. I recommend taking the normal route up.

Special Note: This is the first mountain that actually scared me a little bit. The path that Naver Maps brought me to led to a rock climb with small indents in the rock for your hands and feet. It was also quite windy and a storm was coming. So I called it quits and came back more than half a year later.

I intended to eventually try to hike 서대산 Seodaesan (충청남도에서 가장 높은 산 Chungcheongnam-do’s tallest mountain), 소백산 Seobaeksan (충청북도에서 가장 높은 산 Chungcheongbuk-do’s tallest mountain), 화악산 Hwaaksan (경기도에서 가장 높은 산 Gyeonggi-do’s tallest mountain), 태백산 Taebaeksan (경상북도에서 가장 높은 산 Gyeongsangbuk-do’s tallest mountain), 설악산 Seoraksan (강원도에서 가장 높은 산 Gangwon-do’s tallest mountain), and 지리산 Jirisan (전라북도에서 가장 높은 산 Jeollabuk-do’s tallest mountain), but unfortunately, life got in the way. And to be honest, I was satisfied with just hiking every mountain in Seoul since that was my original goal.
